Statehood came about as a matter of great concentration on the part of the International Longshoreman's and Warehouseman's Union, which said that in order for us to become a truly democratic place in which to live we needed the results of the Wagner Act. I had worked for a trade Union and we had a very difficult time organizing people in the late 30s. Without statehood, the employers did not want to have the Wagner Act put into force in Hawaii. We had not been allowed that particular process to work out here in Hawaii and so it seemed as though statehood brought to a final fruition more democratic processes in our government.
